It's the same old story. Boy finds a devil dog with a chainsaw for a nose, devil dog is assimilated into the boy's body, boy now has a chainsaw ripcord coming out of his chest, boy now can turn into chainsaw man by pulling the ripcord, boy then has a chainsaw coming out of his face and a chainsaw coming out of each arm, boy meets girl from the secret service, secret service girl forces boy to use his chainsaw powers to fight the many devils and demons that run amok in the world, boy is obsessed with boobs, boy is even more obsessed with secret service girl's boobs. We've all heard it a million times before.

Chainsaw Man, Vol. 1: Perro y motosierra (Chainsaw Man,… (2)

I'm not a huge manga reader, but I am always looking out for manga that I might like (I'm a picky little so-and-so). And this just instantly looked completely nuts.

Chainsaw Man, Vol. 1: Perro y motosierra (Chainsaw Man,… (3)

Dear reader, it is completely nuts! Yes, there's the tired trope of the boy obsessing over a girl, but it has some fun with it - the girl basically has no interest in him, and has all the power.

Chainsaw Man, Vol. 1: Perro y motosierra (Chainsaw Man,… (4)

The art is so much fun. It manages to make the chainsaw dog look cute.

Chainsaw Man, Vol. 1: Perro y motosierra (Chainsaw Man,… (5)

Read it!

Denji is basically like Naruto.....except just hornier. Way, waaay, hornier.

Solid start to the manga and probably extremely bingeable. I'm not sure if I'll individually rate the rest of the manga in this collection on GR and rate each instead in a wrap up video but we'll see....

Holy sh*t this is dreadful. I'm baffled as to how it's become so popular.

Let's see, what have we got here?
- Dreadful writing
- Very lackluster background art
- Dialogue between characters that makes the rest of the writing look like a masterpiece
- A several-chapter arc dedicated to the main character trying to convince a female character to let him touch her boobs
- Speaking of boobs:
- Pretty much the only 'personality' trait of the main character is that he's desperate to touch some boobs
- There are a fair few panels which are just zoomed in views of a female character's chest
- One of the female characters gets kidnapped and the main character says "Hey give me my boobs back" which is just dreadful

I sure am glad I held off on buying this and waited for my copy from the library. Suffice to say I will not be continuing on with this series.

Sometimes you just want to read something so insane it'll make you laugh. This is Chainsaw Man.

So at the start we have Denji who is trying to survive. He'll do pretty much anything for some money. He also has his trusty dog Pochita, who has a actual chainsaw coming out of his freaking head. So together they kill devils and make money. But one day something horrible happens to Denji and Pochita must do something to save him. Tus Chainsaw Man is born!

And with that, this insane manga keeps going. I'll be honest first chapter or two I enjoyed but didn't love. However, when they began to bring in a great supporting cast and insane battles the manga kept getting better and better. The humor also kept increasing, but in the right way, and I began laughing at a few parts every chapter.

Listen, turn your brain off, pick up Chainsaw Man, and enjoy. It's a insane action, battle manga, bloody good time. A 4 out o 5.

I've been reading a lot since buying a Shonen Jump subscription. It's all I needed to get me back into the fray.

This is an interesting concept - a young man, who has never gone to school or even tasted jam on bread, owes a great debt to many people due to his deceased father's dubious matters. In this world, demons run rampant in Japan and the rest of the world. As young Denji and his pet demon become one being, he becomes the Chainsaw Man - half man, half demon.

3.8 stars. I found Denji really interesting. Chainsaw Man is a lot like Promised Neverland where you don't know who to trust and have no idea why they do the things they do. The characters are interesting and the backdrop reminds me of Parasyte.

I read it mostly because I heard Mappa is animating it and will soon release it. But how can I root for any character with such poor dialogues and weak morals. Makima is a poor guy's attempt at femme fatale and I'm not impressed by Denji at all.

Okay, so this wasn't exactly my favorite start to a new manga series, but I'm interested in seeing where Fujimoto takes the story and our main character Denji. Chainsaw Man appears to place in our world where humans and demons/devils somewhat coexist. Denji is swimming in debt and kills devils with his devil pet dog Pochita to help bring in some sort of income. Unfortunately, after the Yukuza takes their share, Denji isn't usually left with much. During an unfortunate set up, Denji is forced to join "spirits" with Pochita and becomes Chainsaw Man. Once discovered, he works with Makima and a government based organization to help keep control of all of the demons/devils.

Let's be honest. This book can be cringe at times especially when Denji realizes that he wants nothing more in this world than to touch some boobs. He's the classic lovesick, dopey boy that doesn't seem to have any serious thoughts or perceptions of reality. However, I think that the key to figuring out Denji's behavior is recognizing how he's been raised. There hasn't been a loving parent around, he barely survives, the Yukuza treats him like a pet so when he's offered a comfortable lifestyle and the opportunity to come into contact with a woman he's very vocal about it. Is it annoying in some parts? yes. Does it sometime take away from what could be defined as the complexity of the world? yes. However, part of me understands what Fujimoto was attempting to do with his character. The lack of manners, social cues, giving in to his most basic carnal urges is very indicative of how the environment in which Denji was raised.

I enjoyed the art style for the most part. There was some paneling that I struggled with and had to re-read because they were intense action scenes; nevertheless, I thought that the design work behind the demons/devils was quite interesting. I'm definitely going to keep going with the series. I think that this is one of those manga series that's somewhat divisive. People seem to either enjoy it or really hate it. I'm somewhere in the middle where I'm willing to keep going with it.

I was waiting to start the manga until the show released, and the second I finished the episode ended I picked up volume one! Absolutely in love already. The manga is genuinely hilarious, I laughed out loud constantly.

Disturbing, but funny. Yes, it's possible. Action-packed, but there is always some subtext to keep your mind entertained, not only the eyes.

Take your basic monster hunter premise and insert a very dim protagonist who can magically protrude chainsaws from his arms and face and whose major dreams are pretty simple: food, shelter, and oh yeah, "I wanna touch some boobs . . . "

Leading directly to "Chapter 5: A Way to Touch Some Boobs," with the complaint, "I'd do anything to touch some boobs though," and the offer, "What if I said I'd let you touch my chest . . . if . . . " And eventually we get to, "Gimme back my boobs!"

(Nope, this is not an April Fools prank. Those are actual quotes.)

Despite that B.S., there is an intriguing monster-hunting boss named Makima, some other jokes that are equally stupid but sort of funny, and an exciting cliffhanger. I may give this another try to see if they can move past their little fetish.

Demons are running wild all over the world and plenty of devil hunters are willing to put their necks on the line for a good sum of money. The Yakuza are no exception to this rule. Stuck with a massive debt as a child after losing his deadbeat dad and his mother from a terminal illness, a young boy named Denji has no choice but to enlist his service in the Yakuza faction of hired hunters to earn his keep on the streets because he was never taught a better way of living. His only companion in life is a demon dog with a chainsaw growing out of its head.

A ridiculous but dark and engaging start to a promising hit manga series. It manages to balance gritty horror stuff with absurd comedy and charming character interactions quite well. Its story is a little all over the place, but not necessarily in a bad way. It deals with some sensitive topics in a chaotically unconventional but easy to digest manner.

I think Denji is an interesting protagonist. He seems like a typical dopey teenage boy fixated on the idea of scoring with a beautiful girl, but there’s actually a lot more complexity to him than that. He spent his entire life raised by violent criminals and outcasted from society, meaning he has no education, no manners, and has never even had a single interaction with the opposite sex or a parental figure to give him proper guidance and affection. He’s essentially an unstable toddler in a young man’s body, struggling to figure out how to function like a normal human being while learning to comprehend the basic human emotions, desires and rights that most people take for granted. Making a blood-pact with a chainsaw demon dog that allows him to transform into a weapon of mass destruction doesn’t exactly make Denji’s life any more easy or normal either.

I like the support characters as well. Power is like Harley Quinn on cocaine. Makima is like a female version of Griffith from Berserk or Johan from Monster. Denji’s partner Aki is the brooding serious type which adds an interesting contrast between them. The action and monster designs are also very creative.

My rating: 3.6/5

the hype around this series astounds me. at best, this was a lacklustre start to a mid-tier shounen series...but, if had to be blunt about it, i'd say it was f*cking trashy. we have an every-guy type of main character who doesn't have any ambitions beyond touching some tit*. that's it. beyond that he has no discernible character traits, no recognizable inner beliefs, niente. look, i don't mind reading about a 'that's literally me' type of male protagonist but you gotta give me something to work with. the world-building is shoddy and the character designs are very generic. there are a lot of pages that felt too empty. i understand that adding background entails more work but i found the emptiness distracting. predictable, uninspired, boring, trite, simplistic, nauseatingly male-gazey, i could go on. maybe if this had leaned more into campy satire i could have overlooked how stupid & fanservice-y this was but it appears that this series is under the delusion that it is dark & gritty.
if you happen not to have read this manga i recommend you do not take my review to heart, as i am very much an outlier here so chances are you will be able to vibe with it.

That was not good. The writing was juvenile at best, the plot was threadbare, the characters were nothing but recycled tropes you'll find in a hundred other manga. The main character was an annoying twit. The artwork was adequate, but the gore was poorly done and looked mostly like scribbles. There were a few mildly creative demons. Not worth the time or money.

I had no idea what to expect going in since every screencap of Chainsaw Man was always some guy sitting at a table going “oh my GOD her BOOOOOBS????” but I LOOOOOOVED this. CSM threads such a good balance of silly and also the coolest thing I’ve ever read. Tatsuki Fujimoto never gets bogged down by the typical pretenses of the genre, so his work feels like a breath of fresh air. Chapters end on anti-climactic dead ends. Superpowers aren’t really explained beyond just looking awesome. Characters kick each other in the dick. It’s like reading Naruto for the first time when you were 13 before everything became entrenched in timelines and family trees.

Tatsuki Fujimoto also writes some of my favorite female characters in modern shonen manga. He’s very good at an “I can fix her”: from nasty freaks, to sad losers with snot constantly running down their face, to Most Evil Person Alive, to lesbian hitman with demon harem. The introduction to the protagonist of the second major arc is a total masterclass in establishing a character. How could anyone NOT like these weirdos?

Side note: I watched the first two episodes of the CSM anime, and I like feel the adaptation definitely flubs what makes the manga so funny and weird. But also I DO love looking at Pochita. Pochita….

5/5 This was fabulous. I picked it up on a whim for the cover alone and I’m glad I did. It’s got horror and comedy obviously but also a surprising amount of heart. The action scenes were brutal and absolutely well done.

Denji is a demon hunter with a pet demon of his own, a chainsaw demon. When Denji is brutally killed by demons his pet chainsaw dog makes a pact with him to save him. Now Denji is half human half demon and now a super demon hunter, the chainsaw man.

The first volume covers the origins and Denji’s arrival with a group of civil servant demon hunters. All Denji wants is to work enough to eat and maybe finally get to touch some boobs.

Awesome cover featuring art hero Denji the Chainsaw Man.

I've heard of this manga series a good few times by Joey (The Anime Man) and also, people who like No Guns Life. At first it was a pretty good start because we got to explore hpw our main character, Denji got around to being a chainsaw dude in the first place. I really liked his attitude of being laid back and always saying funny remarks with some of the characters. I did considerably get a few chuckles out of the comedy sides of things involved in this manga. I mean , this manga isn't THAT terrible but I think the boob jokes were rather childish and pretty much boring. As well, I felt the other characters weren't really taken seriously with character development.

One minute they are there and next, they are gone. It's pretty much worse as the GOT last episode with killing potential characters who needed more screen time.....

The fighting scenes were rather a hit/miss like I was pretty underwhelmed by them. Normally if I'm reading fight scenes on any manga I read, I always cheer on the people involved in the fight. Unfortunately not with the MC here which is a pity. Ah well, at least I gave it a long shot for 46 chapters and realised it ain't for me chief!

Really let down by this. It’s just Jujutsu Kaisen with a pervert as a main character. Plot is already bland. It seems to take a lot from Jujutsu, but made it really really boring. Making the character a pervert doesn’t add humor, it just makes him annoying.

This one started good!
Its about a guy named Denji and he gets attacked by people and so he leads a miserable life hunting devils when one day he is killed or almost and merges with his pet Pochita and thus begins his life as the Chainsaw devil and working for Makima and meeting Aki and power, the latter whose also a Human-Devil. And then the fights, the blood and gore in it is so good like his fight with the Zombie devil and Bat devil in particular. Also the art is fantastic and it does sets up a lot of interesting villains to come!

PART TWO HAS BEGUN!! Anyways.

This is a mostly spoiler-free (there are some context-less images) review of the entire first part of Chainsaw Man (volumes 1-11). My goal is to encourage everyone to read at least as far as volume 3, and preferably (if this review is as persuasive as I’d like it to be) through volume 6 before writing the series off as simple, juvenile, needlessly vulgar, or some combination of all of these. Tatsuki Fujimoto is neither a simple nor juvenile writer, though that doesn’t stop them from indulging in the mindless joy of drawing a chainsaw-armed creature messily murderizing some zombies. But blood-splattered action is by no means all this series has to offer.

That said, the first couple volumes don’t do a whole lot to dismiss this impression, and I completely understand those that are turned off by this. But please stick with it for a bit, and repeat with me: “Denji is 16 years old, at the mercy of raging hormones, and didn’t have the best childhood.”

Chainsaw Man, Vol. 1: Perro y motosierra (Chainsaw Man,… (37)
[Figure 1]

Chainsaw Man, Vol. 1: Perro y motosierra (Chainsaw Man,… (38)
[Figure 2]

Questionable motivations aside, he has a heart of gold, is more intelligent than he gives himself credit (as so many kids are), and grows a LOT over the course of the series, which is of course part of the joy of reading it. I’d imagine it’s something like the feeling a teacher gets as they watch a student grow and mature.

Chainsaw Man, Vol. 1: Perro y motosierra (Chainsaw Man,… (39)
[Figure 3]

Chainsaw Man, Vol. 1: Perro y motosierra (Chainsaw Man,… (40)
[Figure 4]

And he’s not the only one – actual, palpable character growth is abundant, something I don’t think is as common as it should be in graphic novels (or fiction, for that matter). Hidden behind the slapstick, sex, and gore Tatsuki Fujimoto is a demanding writer, and in my opinion one of the best “show, don’t tell” manga authors in recent times (a fast rule might be that if you’re a Tarantino fan you’ll probably like Chainsaw Man as well, and I’d reckon the two creators would bond over their shared love for movies, the latter of which shows through in Fujimoto’s beautiful, cinematic paneling, but I digress). Details are packed into every panel, whether in art or dialogue, and you’ll be rewarded the closer you pay attention. Everything from expressions and how characters say what they say can inform plot and character development. Timing and pacing also get high marks, of which the former in particular contributes greatly to several of the funniest sequences I’ve ever read, one of which sideswiped me so hard I’d swear I got whiplash (or maybe I was just laughing that hard).

Chainsaw Man, Vol. 1: Perro y motosierra (Chainsaw Man,… (41)
[Figure 5]

Chainsaw Man, Vol. 1: Perro y motosierra (Chainsaw Man,… (42)
[Figure 6]

And of course there’s action, but if that’s what you came here for then you probably didn’t need to read this review because you already know how good it is.

To wrap things up and not gush too much, admittedly there are times where dialogue can be clunky and the plot a little hurried, but these are so few and overshadowed by moments of brilliance that personally I wasn’t overly bothered. Keep in mind this is a young author and this is one of their early works (it’s going to be exciting to follow their career!). At its most essential, Chainsaw Man has a huge heart. You may have to saw your way through some fat to get to it, but hey, the fat’s where all the flavor is, right?

A story with plenty of ruckuses as Denji and his pet devil-dog Pochita find themselves in a pickle and discover new powers that will give birth to Chainsaw Man. While he was a man with a huge debt, he now joins an organization where his abilities will serve them well.

Although there is something chaotically fun about this series' premise, the second half of the story suddenly incorporates a small perverted motive to the protagonist that either goes with his quirky charm or plunges the entire story into ridicule.

Regardless, this is too fun to pass out on (although knowledge of its sudden end is saddening). Onto the next volume!
