What is conscious information processing? ›

Conscious information processing is the subset of information processing that is accompanied by consciousness. An analogy can illustrate the importance of this seemingly subtle difference. The central nervous system can be divided into gray matter and white matter.

Unconscious cognition is the processing of perception, memory, learning, thought, and language without being aware of it. The role of the unconscious mind on decision making is a topic greatly debated by neuroscientists, linguists, philosophers, and psychologists around the world.

Conscious and unconscious processing differ on several dimensions, including depth and specificity of processing. Action can be initiated without consciousness, and some aspects of perception or memory can also take place without consciousness.

Many studies have reported the existence of unconscious information processing. For example, different types and different levels of masked unconscious stimuli, such as pointing arrows, numbers, words, emotional faces and so on, are found to be processed unconsciously.
