But the town's trademark is the renowned Gothic revival building known as the “Hanging Jail.” There, at the top of a spiral staircase, in view of the other prisoners' jail cells, the condemned would meet their demise in spectacular fashion. But fear not, the people of DeRidder pride themselves on welcoming strangers.

DeRidder was named for Ella de Ridder, the sister-in-law of a Dutch railroad financier.

Living in DeRidder offers residents a suburban rural mix feel and most residents own their homes. Many families and young professionals live in DeRidder and residents tend to have moderate political views. The public schools in DeRidder are above average.

DeRidder is the largest city in Beauregard Parish and at one time held the Guinness World Record of most churches per capita. Was there any room for another church? God answered with a resounding, "Yes".

Beauregard Parish (French: Paroisse de Beauregard) is a parish located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. As of the 2020 census, the population was 36,549. The parish seat is DeRidder.

By 1898, because of the influx of trains and railroad workers who had camped in the area, the town was established. In its early years, DeRidder consisted of 300 people, several small homes, sawmills, a hotel, and five small stores. DeRidder incorporated as a town in 1903.

Natchitoches, the oldest European settlement in present-day Louisiana, was founded by the French explorer Louis Juchereau de St. Denis in 1714. Named after a local Native American group, Natchitoches remained an important colonial outpost during the French, Spanish, and American periods in Louisiana history.

Beauregard Parish Jail is a former jailhouse in DeRidder, Louisiana built in 1914 in the Gothic Revival architecture style. It is referred to as the Gothic jail or the Hanging jail.

Louisiana was admitted as the 18th state of the United States on April 30, 1812.
