Panthera atrox, better known as the American lion, also called the North American lion, or American cave lion, is an extinct pantherine cat. Panthera atrox lived in North America during the late Pleistocene epoch and the early Holocene epoch, from around 340,000 to 11,000 years ago.
Some could theoretically survive in the southern USA and Mexico, but not much else. Lack of prey. Sure there are places with plenty of prey animals, but these are isolated, and often not large enough to support multiple prides. Lack of space.
atrox had relatively long, slender limbs. Indeed, this cat looked very similar to the modern lion, only bigger and with longer legs. Significant sexual dimorphism has been established for this species and males were up to 1.40 times larger than females, on average (Wheeler and Jefferson 2009).
However, around 10,000 years ago, they went extinct, alongside many other ice age animals. The exact reasons are unknown. Their demise may have been due to human actions, climate change, or both. Whatever the cause, the reign of the lions in North America ended with the ice age.
Only an estimated 24,000 wild lions remain. Recent research from Panthera's Lion Director and Oxford University's Wildlife Conservation Research Unit estimates the global lion population was as large as 200,000 in 1900 and that it decreased to 90,000 in 1970.
At the current rate of habitat loss and poaching, African lions could be completely extinct by 2050. Lions are one of the most loved animals in the world and one of the biggest drawcards for travelers to Africa.

It's very close, but I would have to give it to the American Lion. The American Lion (Panthera atrox) was the largest species of cat to walk the earth with males being 8 feet in length, 3′9″ in height and weighing over 1,100 lbs. they were a very large and formidable predator.
